Bourj Hammoud, mélange florissant de commerces modernes et de métiers traditionnels au nord-est de Beyrouth, abrite une communauté dynamique d’Arméniens, commerçants, artisans et artistes, jeunes ou âgés. En moins d’un siècle, le simple camp de toile, peuplé de réfugiés qui avaient fui la Turquie en 1915, s’est transformé en centre économique urbain, grouillant d’activité. C’est sur ce quartier qu’Ariane Delacampagne a choisi de fixer sa caméra.
Au fil des ans, elle a noué des liens avec les personnages marquants qui y habitent et y travaillent, tailleurs, cordonniers, brodeuses et horlogers, bijoutiers ou sertisseurs. Le résultat est un portrait inoubliable du courage, de l’esprit et du patrimoine qui constituent l’âme de Bourj Hammoud. In less than a century the area has transformed itself from a tent city of refugees – the Armenians who fled Turkey in 1915 and began flocking here in the 1920s – to a bustling urban economic center.
Ariane Delacampagne, née Ateshian, est une photographe libanaise d’origine arménienne. Son travail photographique sur la communauté arménienne de Bourj Hammoud a fait l’objet d’expositions individuelles à Barcelone (2007), à Beyrouth (2010) et à Paris (2011). Elle vit et travaille à New York. Biographie en anglais Ariane Ateshian Delacampagne is a photographer of Armenian descent who was born in Lebanon.
Her work on the Armenian community of Bourj Hammoud has been the focus of solo exhibitions in Barcelona (2007), Beirut (2010), and Paris (2011). She currently lives and works in New York.
